The Oriental Songket

FACTS ABOUT ME

  • I love corn beef
  • People never believed me when I told them I’m a reformed shopaholic and I have no idea why! I am, you guys
  • Emma Watson (yes, Hermoine Granger) was my super super senior from Headington School Oxford, where I did my A level in the UK!!!!

THE ORIENTAL SONGKET

Hello Everyoneee! I am back! Yes I know I didn’t do any blogging at all last month ‘cos I have been busy trying to get myself finally settling back in Brunei! And also I was away for a week for my Penang Trip- now that I mentioned it, should I make an entry on that? Decision, decision…

Anyway…less about me, more about Naforrer! YES! Naforrer! Songket! Songket! Who uses most Songket fabric here in Brunei if it’s not the one and only our talented local designer, Farhanna Pura of course! I am pretty sure most of you have seen this piece that Im about to share with you either at Fashion Valet or on Naforrer’s instagram page!

The location for “The Oriental Songket” shoot was taken place at our apartment at Iffley in London. Which means, this time the location was not, as you may say it – historical like my previous posts. So don’t worry, I won’t go all-fantasy for this entry but I’ll go traditional, (at least I’ll try..)

Castle

The Oriental Songket was launched this year for Naforrer’s Raya Edition, which entails a mix of tradition and modernity.

Castle

It is a high waist skirt with a zipper detail at the back. The Songket fabric is light and soft unlike most other Songket fabrics.

Castle

And unlike any other Songket made-to-wear, Farhanna added a patch of lace on the skirt! I’d say she was being daring on this one!

Castle

And look how it turns out! ‘cos usually you would leave Songket on its own, right? Usually, its own patterns are more than enough to scream its tradition and style. But with the addition of a lace patch on the Oriental Songket, it emphasizes the Songket more with a hint of high-fashion and exclusiveness.

Castle

Of course, as usual, Naforrer caters both modesty and sexiness! You can wear it as a high waist skirt with a crop-top as seen on Phoebe or you can style it like me!

Castle

For a casual and simple look, I paired the Oriental Songket skirt with a basic long sleeve from H&M and a black shawl by Sharqiaa.

Castle

And I accessorized it with a bronze-layered necklace and my favourite arm cuff to highlight the traditional look!

Castle

I’m afraid that is it for now peeps! It’s rather a short one this time! I hope you guys enjoyed reading and browsing through The Oriental Songket. I will be back with more updates on my life as a part-time model and a Brand Ambassador of Naforrer!

If you like this entry don’t forget to share it and drop any comments anywhere on my social pages if you guys have any suggestions or ideas on what you would like to see from me and Naforrer!

Thank you reader and bye for now!
Love,
Siddiqah xx.

BSc Mathematics, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK - Class Of 2016

Hello everyone! How’s your summer holiday so far?? I hope you guys have been enjoying every bits of it! Good news! I am now back in Brunei for good this time and ready to socialize and meet you all creative people! Yes you!

In case you haven’t noticed, I am not starting off my entry this time with the 3 weird facts about me, which I’ve always been doing. And that’s ‘cos I am trying to make this entry as formal as it can be. (At least I hope it will..)

Castle1

After 6 years of studying in the UK, 2 years of A level in Oxford and 4 years of degree in Scotland, on the 21st june of 2016, EXACTLY a month ago, I finally graduated from Heriot-Watt University with an Upper Second Class to bring home, holding a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mathematics with Honours.

Castle1

As with other graduates, I learnt a lot from attending university. I would give you 3 words to describe university: FREEDOM, DISCIPLINE AND FRIENDSHIP . I am proud to say that I love going to university. If humans were created ageless, I would go to university over and over again – really? Yes, really. The thing about attending a university is that, by the end of the day, you come out as a matured individual, a graduate who has gone through a lot, be it late night studies, stress, anxiety, but with all that happened, the university offers you “freedom”. Freedom of thoughts, freedom of actions and interactions, to shape you as a well-rounded graduate.

Castle1

I know freedom is a bit contradicting with discipline but universities also taught you self-discipline. At university, your attendance for lectures and tutorials don’t matter at all because there are no attendance slips. Your lecturer won’t even gonna scold you for not attending lectures. You can do whatever you want. And that is where self-discipline comes in. YOU discipline yourself , YOU do your own time management, YOU take your own initiative of asking during tutorials, YOU do everything yourself! It’s ALL YOU. But not really..

Castle1

Because my lecturer once told me, that you need friends, in order to survive university. I know this may not apply to all, ‘cos some people prefer to be on their own and I respect that. But to some, we need each other to get through university. I am grateful to have a friend, who has always been with me since my first year at university. We’ve been through a lot together and I am so thankful for all his help whenever I am struggling with my assignments and tutorials.

Castle1

Now, I am not gonna lie, but the final year of university really really test your mentality, patience and perseverance. Those last moments of your final year dissertation are the peak and the grand finale of your years at university. Remember that it will be over before you know it and it will be worth it. For me, my strongest motivation to hold on and keep on moving was my parents and that I am doing this for them, to give them that one special scroll upon receiving it on my graduation day.

Castle1

My advice to all undergrads out there, who are still fighting strong to complete your degrees or diplomas, is that, whatever happens, never ever stop and give up. Take your time, it is not a race. Your journey is your own . In the end, it will all be worth it.

Castle1

As for my graduation outfit, I think you can guess who designed it. Well, if it’s not by our one and only Naforrer! Being the brand ambassador of Naforrer on my final year has not been a burden to me at all. And that’s because I enjoy being a student and a part-time model/ brand ambassador at the same time. So to define who I really am on my special day, the “Made-to-Measure Begawan Dress” was specially designed for me by Farhanna Pura, the talented lady behind Naforrer. It was such a coincidence that the colour of Begawan is the theme colour of Heriot-Watt University. I have never been so proud of representing my culture, country and my own achievement on that day.

Castle1

I would like to present my warmest gratitude and thank you to my family who have been supporting me ever since I left Brunei in 2010 and who have been there for me despite the long distance, every time I feel like giving up and homesick. For my friends, Bruneians, Scottish and Malaysians, thank you for the beautiful friendship, I will surely gonna cherish it always. And also to those who have been supporting me in my part-time career as a model- Thank you. Finally, I am now able to officially declare that I am a Mathematics Degree Holder, With Honours, from Heriot-watt University, Edinburgh Scotland, Class of 2016.

Now dear reader, sit back, relax and enjoy this video made by AR.

Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken

FACTS ABOUT ME

  • I have an unusual attachment to my stuffed animals, Giraffe and Dipsy, yes I do
  • I take more selfies with animals than with humans
  • I have unexplainably long and slender arms, and my best friend always use them as her go pro/selfie stick

UNBOWED, UNBENT, UNBROKEN

Hello everyone! I hope you guys enjoyed reading my previous blog post, “A Pinch of Fairy Dust” and hopefully I didn’t bore you guys with my nonsensical imagination.

Are you guys ready for my next big fantasy??
So let’s hop on your dragons and step back in time to relive the bygone era! But wait! Before we take off, let me explain to you why I named this entry “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”. Well, believe it or not, ever since my 2nd year of uni, I vowed not to watch any TV series until I finished my very last exam in my final year ‘cos I know I will easily get addicted, I mean who doesn’t, right? And yes, I did not break that vow. I know I’ve been missing out a lot. So I made a list of TV shows to catch up once I’m done with uni and the first on the list was The Game of Thrones! Until recently, I’ve been a human burrito guys, like literally a human burrito. I snuggled up in my bed all day catching up with The Game of Thrones from season 1. And of course, I got addicted and never stop talking about it every now and then! So yeah don’t get me started.

Anyway, for those who are also a fan of game of thrones, I’m pretty sure you guys are familiar with the phrase I chose for this entry. For those who aren’t, the phrase “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken” is the house word for House Martell, one of the noble houses in the seven kingdoms of Westeros in the Game of Thrones. As a fan of Game of Thrones, I did the house quiz on Buzz Feed aaaaand my house is Martell!

That is why I decided to name this month’s page as “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”. To me, this phrase perfectly suits my next outfit by Naforrer and the photo shoot settings, which is The Craigmillar Castle!

UNBOWED: (adj.) not having submitted to pressure or demands

For this photo shoot, I am portraying a majestic and regal girl on fire! As we all know, “A girl on fire” never submits to pressure or demands. She is bold, fierce and free! This personality together with The Obi Songket Wrap Belt and Songket Palazzo Pants by Naforrer made a perfect assembly of the unbowed.

UNBENT: (verb) become straight from a bent or twisted form or position

I am not sure if you guys ever noticed or not, throughout my recent photo shoots, I have not been pulling off the fierce face and poses a lot. That’s because I have been too comfortable doing the sweet, graceful and innocent looks. But this time! I tried my best to unbend and go back to basics and gain confidence again upon unleashing my fierceness for this photo shoot.

UNBROKEN: (adj.) not broken, fractured or damaged

The Craigmillar Castle is a ruined medieval castle in Edinburgh. It was built between the early 15th and mid-17th century. Like any building lived in for over 350 years, Craigmillar Castle was altered and added to many times. Although it is a ruin, I don’t see it as one. This castle took my breath away! I literally feel like I have lived in the era. It’s just so best preserved that I see it as unbroken. I really can’t imagine how it used to look like before!

So those are my own interpretations for the word of House Martell, which I relate to my photo shoot setups this month. Of course, you guys are free to interpret them in your own way!

So without further ado, let’s fly to The Craigmillar Castle!

The Obi Songket Wrap Belt and Songket Palazzo Pants were my first outfits during my VERY FIRST photo shoot for Naforrer last year. They have a special place in my heart and they are my prize possessions from Farhanna.

Castle1

I wore these outfit during the Urban Muslim Woman Show in London, Im pretty sure some of you may have read my blog post on that one. I received a lot of compliments and I was proud to represent Naforrer that night.

Castle1

As Farhanna has mentioned on her instagram post, “Black, Sophistication, Power, Drama, Elegance, Formality, Mystery”, these pairs are very versatile and unique.

Castle1

You are free to wear it with or without the obi belt, regardless all eyes and compliments are gonna be on and for you!
I wore these pairs to my graduation ball as well. Yes guys, I’m an outfit repeater! (Specifically directed to those who are an “outfit rememberer” – im joking)

Castle1

But who cares, I really LOVE them! The Obi Belt and the Songket Palazzo Pants are my MOST favourite pieces by Naforrer. Even my mom likes them!

Castle1

You guys know how much of a sucker for Songket I am right? Well, everytime Farhanna shows me her latest designs especially the ones with Songket on, I screamed on the inside (and reply to her texts in caps) – that’s how CRAZY I am if she adds Songket to her new line.

Castle1

The Obi Songket Wrap Belt and the Songket Palazzo Pants always give me confidence every time I wear them, it’s like they possess their own magic. I would totally recommend you guys to own these pairs!

Castle1

I paired these two with the black Sharqiaa shawl by @sharqiaabn

And I got myself a Knight's Pen as a souvenir from visiting The Craigmillar Castle!

By the way guys, Raya is coming!! Have you guys seen our Monodramatic Raya Collection on Fashion Valet? This year, Raya with Naforrer features a demure and modern update to the traditional silhouettes, expect classy and elegant designs to fulfill your festive wear needs!

I’m afraid that is it for now guys! I hope you guys enjoyed reading this humongous blog post. This month’s entry means so much to me because most of my favourite stuffs (Game of Thrones and the outfits) are mentioned here and The Craigmillar Castle is now my most favourite ruined castle!

A Pinch of Fairy Dust

FACTS ABOUT ME

  • I love reading dystopian and fantasy books
  • I have a tele tubby (called dipsy -the green one) and she/he? has been with me since 1999
  • Chicken joy Jollibee is LIFE!

Warning! From now onwards (at least ‘till summer ends), this page may contain a lot of fantasy and magical contents. (This is the effect of watching a lot of TV shows and reading books on fantasy but I can assure you I’m not crazy even though I’ve been fantasizing every now and then)

A PINCH OF FAIRY DUST

Hello everyone! Let’s switch off from reality and dive in to the fantasy medieval world of kings and queens, princes and princesses, knights and armors and not to forget the magical creatures of dragons, fairies, demons, trolls and werewolves!

Spread your wings and let the fairy in you fly! So I can take you to a land full of historic landmarks, ruins and witchery and that is Edinburgh! Edinburgh is a perfect place for you to fantasize since it has a medieval Old Town and an elegant Georgian New Town, with gardens and neoclassical buildings.

I would recommend people to come and visit Edinburgh especially during these times. It’s just sooo beautiful and breath-taking!  [but NOT during winter! Seriously, NOT during winter!]

Our first destination is the Lauriston Castle! The Lauriston castle is a 16th-century Edwardian tower house set with 19th-century extenstions and landscaped grounds.

Castle

The Castle is set within a historic garden laid out by William Henry Playfair in the 1840s. Overlooking the Firth of Forth and Cramond Island, the views from the garden are just simply magical and magnificent.

Castle

"Kyoto friendship garden” is one of the tranquil grounds at the castle. It is a Japanese friendship garden gifted by the prefecture of Kyoto. It is soooo stunning and it gives you the sense of relaxation and serenity.

Castle

With these spectacular views, I thought it would be perfect to wear one of Naforrer’s designs! "The Duchess" Lace Batwing top is specially designed with a delicate balance between sexiness and modesty.

Castle

You can wear it with anything! Be it a tank top, a tube top, or simply a long sleeve tee like mine!

Castle

I paired “The Duchess” with a PRIDE Hope skirt by Jovian Mandagie and a bamboo scarf by dUCk in lychee.

Castle

“The Duchess” is absolutely perfect for our scorching days! The batwing detail is such a breezy one! Like "a pinch" of fairy dust, I would wear minimal accessories ‘cos the lace itself makes enough of a statement.

And that's me. . day dreaming.. I literally couldn't stop saying "I want my own castle" on that day- I feel sorry for my best friend for having to put up with me most of the time. I just really wanna have my own castle and dragons and walk in medieval gowns gracefully… Everything is so gracious back then, they way they talk, walk, eat, dance! Oh dear lord, that would be a dream come true!

Okay so back to reality now! I hope you guys enjoy reading my so-called fantastical entry and yes! more medieval and bygone era entries to come! Watch my social media pages for updates and for when I will post my next entrée!

Hi Tea With Hepburn

FACTS ABOUT ME

  • I'm a taugeh queen, I'd prefer eating them raw as snacks
  • I never stop dreaming of having my own kingdom, dragons and faeries
  • I like my cereal soggy (sorry- didn't mean to disgust some of you)
  • I survived BSc Mathematics with a year of pre-master programme !

And I'm a FREE ELF NOW!

Hello everyone! I’m finally back after months of constant battle at university. I apologize for not being able to update my page and fulfilling my promise to you regarding my winter photo shoot. Snow didn’t fall this year (such a bummer – yes I know), it would have been pretty and magical. But, fret not, I have something else on the menu for you lots!

Some of you may have seen me in Naforrer Hepburn Top on my instagram account before, but I have not actually made an entry about it.

HI TEA WITH HEPBURN

Well not really a “hi tea” – I just state it cos it sounds so cool with “Hepburn” but yeah we were having tea on that day at CULT Espresso in Edinburgh and as usual, what's a cafe hopping without having our pictures taken especially when your outfit is on point. Right?

HI TEA WITH HEPBURN

“Hepburn” is a simple classy Naforrer’s piece with a 70s vibe. It is a black flared polka dot top paired with a matchy capri pants (not in picture). I wore this set with a black Swarovski Scarf by Najaah Thara'

HI TEA WITH HEPBURN

The fabric is made of soft and light cotton suited for a sizzler. Why? Because Naforrer takes your comfortability into account when it comes to designing!

HI TEA WITH HEPBURN

Unleash your inner Hepburn with your own choice of fabric at Naforrer!

HI TEA WITH HEPBURN

Now hold on!

I have more for you guys to see! Stay tune and watch my page for something magical and follow me on instagram and snapchat if you would like to be notified for when I post a new entry.

A Touch of Tradition

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME

  • 23 years old
  • Studying Bsc Mathematics at Heriot-watt University, Edinburgh Scotland UK
  • Been in the UK since 2010
  • A bookworm who loves to sniff on books (Excuse me)
  • A potterhead, with a constant struggle to have a self-control in public
  • Despise broccoli for life!

Warning! : I was never a fashion blogger let alone a blogger, so having my very own page in Naforrer is new to me! But I am looking forward to represent Naforrer and excited to meet, socialize and exchange views with new people!

Pyramid 3

And that’s how I became a model! And yes I have always wanted to be a model ever since I was a kid and Alhamdulillah opportunities were given to me and here I am now as a Brand Ambassador of Naforrer.

I have always been obsessed with “diversity” and challenging myself not merely academically, but also socially through modeling and networking.

Being given the opportunity to be a public figure is very prestigious as you can reach and inspire not only youngsters out there but hopefully a wide scope of people!

So here it goes..

[spacer height="50px"]

2015 RAYA WITH NAFORRER

Last year, Naforrer designed and tailored 3 pieces of “Kain tenunan” print by Hj Zainal Abidin into pleated skirts. She named them “Regalia” , “Begawan” and “Darussalam”. And as a full time shopaholic and a sucker for Bruneian Songket, I ended up with all three!

SittingResized

"Regalia" is my favorite amongst the others because obviously it is red, giving an extra fiery and fierceness vibe! Put on your reddest lipstick and you’re ready to stomp! - photo by : Asnawi Metussin, @thefoudrayanteye, Studio 128 Edinburgh,UK.

IMG_9787resized

"Darussalam" is more on traditions reflecting our National theme

IMG_9814resized

I paired this piece with a necklace I found from TopShop, a Swarovski scarf by one of our local brands, Najaah Thara' and a “Songket + Leather” handbag from Asnika Gallery. Asnika Gallery is one of the biggest Brunei’s Kain Tenunan production and both Najaah and Asnika Gallery are located at the Brunei Airport [in case you'd want to have a look at their collections].

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 7.54.56 PM

As for "Begawan", I have 2 pieces, each having a different design. One is the pleated skirt and the other is the “made-to-measure”. I'm saving the latter for my special day this summer! So stay tune!

URBAN MUSLIM WOMAN SHOW 2015

In mid-october last year, my best friend and I went to an all women fashion show in London where they showcased a number of local and international fashion brands. It was amazing! I was awed and mesmerized by the runway models, they just looked so flawless and were literally living mannequins!

IMG_3684

IMG_3702

IMG_3696

This is my favourite piece that night! By Roddiva Couture. Her brand signature is "innovative" targeting both sexy and modesty - just like Naforrer! By the way, I loooove long capes especially when they are hooded AND having red linings.

IMG_3553

And Naforrer dressed me of course! I was wearing the Songket Palazzo Pants, wrapped with the Songket Obi belt, crowned with Satin silk scarf by Inayah, heightened by New Look studded heels and accessorized with a quilted clutch from Zara.

12570826_571768966303793_1630706471_n

We met a lot of inspiring designers and creative entrepreneurs during the event too!

IMG_3737

Black and gold for the night with a touch of tradition, by Naforrer

It was my very first time attending a fashion show and I look forward to attend more or hopefully be in one! I’ve always wanted to try runway and see if I ever stumble while walking!

[spacer height="50px"]

MY FIRST RUNWAY SHOW [FOR CHARITY]

Roughly 2 weeks after the Urban Muslim Women Show, my Scottish friend scouted me as one of her models for “Charity Week Edinburgh Fashion Show 2015” that she organized.

IMG_3942

No it wasn't a Vogue fashion show peeps. This was the just ticket and part of the marketing - well you get the general idea. But it looked so cool I just had to post it here!

IMG_3963

My make-up for the night by Nagina MUA - Scotland based

IMG_4120

IMG_4210

IMG_3968

Aaww look at this little superman owning the stage right before the show!

The stage was not big and the runway walk wasn’t as spread out as the real runway show. But hey, everything has to start from the bottom right? Nevertheless, I had fun during the night and no I did not stumble but I gotta say – I need to keep on practicing and practicing on my runway walk before Naforrer’s runway show (opps! Did I just say that out loud?)

[spacer height="50px"]

FIRST BRIEF-NAFORRER PHOTOSHOOT IN THE UK

I spent my winter break here in the UK mostly: reading, hibernating and being a “human burritto” ‘cos it was so freaking cold! Amidst all that, the highlight of my break was my first brief Naforrer photoshoot here in Edinburgh! And I chose the National Museum of Scotland as the location of the photoshoot.

IMG_4937resize

Presenting Naforrer’s new piece : Songket Trench Coat

IMG_4950resized

Now I know your first impression on this coat might be: its too thick, coarse and heavy. ‘cos to be honest with you I had sort of the same thoughts as well before actually trying it on.

IMG_4942resized

Well, if that’s what you think, you are wrong! The songket fabric is thin, soft and very light! Mathematically speaking, its 0.754kg [yes I saw the weight when I mailed it back to Farhanna] . Perfect for Brunei weather, if you'd ask me. Perfect for eveningwear, occasional wear or even just a casual wear as a cardigan!

IMG_4918resized

The Songket Trench Coat will give you the “dramatic breeze effect” while all eyes are on you!

So...winter is here! Can you guys guess what's my next photoshoot will be?

Stick around my page to find out whats coming next from me, brand ambassador of Naforrer.

Thank you reader & Bye for now!

Love,

Siddiqah
