"I raise up my voice—not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard...we cannot succeed when half of us are held back." ―Malala Yousafzai .Call us feminists, call us idealists, call us femme fatales, call us equalists. You're right, right about all these words, right about everything.
I had the opportunity to work with two amazing fashion bloggers with different aesthetics, of whom I am very fond of as well. By our first ever meeting with each other separately, we all have become very close with one another. These girls are my soul sisters and I'm so grateful to have them in my life.
The three of us had a creative concept in mind "Women Empowerment", I suppose this is more of a 'to each their own' type-of-topic. There are billions of women in this world with different beauty, race, culture, skin-colour and etc. All of these unique traits combined with colourful personalities are morphed into what empowerment is all about.
You could say that the three of us celebrate different personalities in women and also of us being part of a different race and culture, in Brunei. These are just some little bits of background information about us. These are my thoughts and impressions of them by the way, subject to change! Hahaha!
Personal style plays a very big role in our lives, it is what makes us US.
With her flaming red hair, slender body and fair, porcelain skin; she is definitely one to stand out from the crowd. She is quirky and soft-spoken from afar, but very headstrong and out-spoken with the people that she's close to. She has so much creativity for words through her blog (do check it out! - http://www.themayden.com/). Black clothes and black shoes, always giving hints of mystery with every step that she takes. Quiet and endearing in personality, but always a dominatrix with her grungy, dark clothes. She's always a force to be reckoned with!
"Grunge is a hippied romantic version of punk"
"It's sometimes said that I'm rebellious and I do things to push people's buttons, but I just like the challenge"
Everything said in these Marc Jacobs quotes are basically what you need to know about May.
Shi Min (@discofissh):
Pondering in the shadows with a creative outlook in life, here's Shi Min. A soft-spoken girl with a big heart, that's what drew me to her from the very beginning when I first met her. With her monochromatic style, always the blacks, the whites and the greys, you may think that she is very intimidating. But alas, what a total opposite! She is far from intimidating, she draws people in by her reserved, yet determined nature. She has an old soul; traditional, yet always timeless with her personal style. It is true when they say monochromes are classic and lasting throughout the history of fashion. (Check out her blog - http://www.discofissh.com/ )
"One is NEVER over-dressed or under-dressed in a little black dress" - Karl Lagerfeld. This quote will always remind me of Shi Min, she is never over-done or under-done with monochromatic colours.
Phoebe Chok (@someblondehead):
And then....there's me, Phoebe Chok. I don't really know what to say about myself in all honesty. I'm just...I don't know...me. Most people would label me as a 'model' in Brunei, but I would like to think that I'm a Model and a Inspirationer, not being an inspiration of modelling, but as a body advocate. I have always wanted to inspire people, not only through what I do, but as a self-image and self-confidence mentor for women with these disheartening issues. I have always wanted to be an inspirational motivator for young girls.
My fashion sense? I don't have a preference in what I wear. It all really depends on my mood really, sometimes I would feel happy, then I would opt for bright colours and on other days, I'm moody, hence a toned-down, monochromatic look. Then again, I would always opt for what looks better on my body shape and whether I look "fat" in any of the clothing choices. It does not matter what particular style I prefer best, it is more of what suits me and I'm never afraid to try something new. You could say that I am extremely unapologetic in my choice of clothing and fashion.
I have no idea what to say about myself, honestly. I would like to say that I am extremely ambitious and passion-driven, but I had to ask May and Min what are the first words that popped into their mind when they think about me, both in front of the camera and out of the camera. I would never have thought about these things for myself, but I have received the answers:
- unapologetic (in all of my portfolio works, according to May)
- idiosycrasy? (hahaha according to Min, where I have a lot of funny quirks that I'm not aware of)
- adorable? (according to the BOTH of them! I was just so happy!)
- stands out from the crowd
Each of us have our own little quirks of uniqueness, and that's what makes the three of us really successful in our own achievements. We can be who we want to be, and you can be who you want to be; all it takes is a little effort and a determined nature. We have gone through so much in our daily lives, that nothing will be able to stop us from loving what we love to do.
We are empowered to take on the challenges. We are here to prove to those that don't believe in what we do. We are here to take a step forward to the future.
Whenever you hear a little voice in your head that tells you that you're not good enough because you're different from everyone else, prove that 'little voice' wrong. Nobody should be afraid to stand up for what's right.
Finally, to conclude, women should never be held back by anyone who says that they can't. Women should take on the world in order to find happiness and success in their lives through opportunities, friendships, relationships, careers and through justice. We are all beautiful, believe that.
Hence, cheers to being powerful women!
(...and a cheery photo from the three of us...)
